I used to play with a pick. I changed up because I had to learn to play with fingers and it also sounds much better with fingers. I do however know that using a pick has its place...some songs only sound right when you use a pick like the recordings...but moat of the time I try to use fingers unless the song calls for a pick.

This is GREAT. It's quite some time now that I'm falling in love (again, and more than ever) with the "classic heavy metal" music. The bass parts of that era of heavy music (and the general sound of it) are such an inspiration, such a pleasure to listen to. I'm watching all your masterclass videos and I hope you'll keep building the channel toward this idea of a place to go to in order to practice and understanding that style, this might be the only channel I found that seems to go in this direction. More modern metal music just doesn't do it for me, when it comes to playing the bass guitar (even if I definitely love and listen to an array of more modern bands..even though, not so often anymore))

Question.....I notice you (and many many other bassists) use the A on the fifth fret of the E string instead of the open A string itself. Is that a matter of personal preference or is there more to it than that? Personally I always use the open A string as I find it easier.

Jimmy Bain was Scottish so that really means he has no Roman DNA in his family tree :) This seems to be the best bass cover of the song up even if I think it might have been embellished a little.

I know it would be proper to play C, D and D sharp on the up end of that lick but Jimmy did it the lazy way and rolled over the D and onto the D sharp without sound out the D. This is why I do it the same way as Jimmy in my video that you will notice is not the same as you play it.
